OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://213.154.77.59/SOURCES/.WORLDBATH432/.bath/%5BX%5D0/detrend-bfl/%5BY%5Ddifferences/dods')
